Bridging the Gap

Bridging the “knowing and doing” gap is complex but an absolute necessity to reduce the burden of disease and specifically cancer. It is our responsibility to act now to protect the health of future generations.

Mission

TO DEVELOP A SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM SCALED GLOBALLY TO BRIDGE THE WIDENING GAP BETWEEN “KNOWING AND DOING' IN PREVENTING CANCER AND PROMOTING OVERALL WELLNESS

Who we are

Unite to Prevent Cancer is a global health and wellness initiative, created by health innovators and social entrepreneurs, focused on the elimination of preventable cancers. Notably up to 50% of cancers can be prevented simply by taking the knowledge in hand today and adopting it into practice. To make cancer prevention a reality, we must bridge the gap between 'knowing and doing' and most actions must be taken during childhood and adolescence in order to prevent cancers that occur in adulthood.

The combined impact of prevention policies, strategic coordination across an uncommon table of stakeholders, innovative technology and engagement of youth, their families and communities are needed to create a sustainable, scaled system to bridge the gap. The realization of this goal will save millions of lives and up to 50 trillion dollars globally over the next generation.

Bridging the Gap is Critical.

Vision

Core Principles

Utc

1

Laser Focus on Bridging the Gap
Extraordinary physicians and scientists have discovered and continue to find new evidence-based strategies to prevent cancer. Multitudes of organizations, large and small, are working to implement this new knowledge. Our goal is to amplify and connect these two worlds, not to duplicate nor compete with ongoing efforts; to become a trusted, effective ally in our common fight to make cancer prevention a reality.

2

An Uncommon Table of Collaboration
Bridging the gap between knowing and doing requires enlisting new voices, ideas, imagination and networks. Alongside policymakers, physicians, scientists, educators and health practitioners, investors and philanthropists who are already engaged in cancer prevention, we must expand the table. We intend to persuade and attract leading social media influencers, movement builders, tech gurus, musicians, gamers, journalists, and faith leaders.

3

Global in Scope, Local in Action
Cancer knows no geographic or cultural boundaries. From inception, our strategies will draw from global networks, experience and knowledge – including alignment with the health-related Global Goals – while relying on the wisdom of local/national leadership for execution and implementation.

4

Engaging Young People as Problem Solvers
We see children and youth as central to changing the odds in cancer prevention. Overwhelming evidence shows that smart investments and interventions during these early years are the best hope for preventing cancer and other diseases later in life.

5

Action and Execution are Critical
We believe that execution and delivery are just as important as policy changes. We will support leaders and organizations in their efforts to bridge the gap when they prioritize investments and incentives toward quality implementation and action.

6

Ambitious, Scalable & Sustainable Solutions
We will seize opportunities that are strategic, scalable and sustainable. There have been many excellent public awareness campaigns focused on cancer and other diseases, mostly with a short term goal of raising money to “find a cure” and/or support the work of specific organizations. Our goal is to build a movement that converts knowledge into sustainable action eliminating preventable cancers for the next generation.

Strategy

The Gaps

Converting Knowledge into Sustainable Action
Cancer and other age-related diseases extract a significant societal, emotional and economic toll on a global scale. Our knowledge and evidence-based strategies can prevent up to 50% of all cancers. The average person does not understand their inherent risk of developing cancer and other diseases nor do they know what lifestyle changes are needed to reduce their risk of disease and how to access preventive services. Actions to prevent adult cancers must begin during childhood/adolescence

Convening & Coordinating across Diverse Stakeholders Globally
There are many great organizations and cancer centers, alongside many others in the public, private and civil society sectors, that are focused on the development and/or dissemination of strategies, policies, education, and services to improve the health of communities and nations, each making meaningful contributions. But more must be done to coordinate across these groups to align unique capabilities, strategy and funding.

Engaging Young People
Society often fails to recognize the power of young people in effecting cultural transformation. Our youth become engaged when something is real, relevant and right now.

Harnessing Technology & Innovation
Global highly accessible user friendly digital platforms need to be developed and deployed to enable individuals to understand their personalized cancer risk assessment and specific actions they need to take to reduce their risk.

THIS GATHERING STORM REQUIRES DECISIVE, COLLECTIVE ACTION NOW.

Our Approach

Unite to Prevent Cancer is singularly focused on a global strategy to make cancer prevention a reality. Bridging the gap between 'knowing and doing' requires strategic planning and funding, the collective capabilities of a worldwide partner coalition consisting of a diverse, global uncommon table, pro-active health policies protecting future health, youth and community engagement and innovative technology and educational solutions to disseminate relevant health knowledge to individuals.

Recognizing that major social shifts and demographic trends are often neglected in the context of short-term political and/or investment return cycles, Unite to Prevent Cancer will support visionary leaders and organizations with the conviction to promote the health and well-being of future generations. Utilizing technology and working in partnership with communities, we will empower the individual to understand their personal risk of cancer and the actions they can take to eliminate prevenable diseases later in life.

What we learn in bridging the gap with cancer prevention will have a positive impact on other areas such as diabetes, heart disease and chronic stress. Freedom from preventable disease must become a societal priority.

United Support to Ban Flavored E-Cigarettes

We strongly support President Trump’s proposal, made on September 11, 2019, to swiftly remove all non-tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes, including mint and menthol flavors, from the marketplace both in retail stores and online. We urge the Administration to act without delay to finalize and implement its plan. If this plan is swiftly and fully implemented, it will play a critical role in reversing the youth e-cigarette epidemic and preserve the health and well-being of our nation’s children.

Now is the time to act to prevent e-cigarettes from becoming an on-ramp to nicotine addiction for a generation of youth.

Contact

Unite to Prevent Cancer (UTPC) is the most recent initiative of ImagineNations Group (ING), a U.S. §501(c)(3) public charity. Established in 2002 with early support from the International Youth Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Omidyar Network, and others, ING continues to fulfill one of its original purposes – serving as a platform to incubate high-impact charitable initiatives and then spinning them off into independent charitable organizations. Since its inception, ING has incubated and helped to launch a variety of such initiatives. UTPC is the newest of these vital social ventures, and is in the process of becoming its own independent §501(c)(3) public charity with a new name but the same compelling mission.

In the meantime, your contributions remain tax-deductible. Under IRS rules, UTPC is treated as a wholly-controlled division or branch of its sole parent ING. As such, UTPC shares ING’s tax-exempt status and all contributions to UTPC, whether made directly to UTPC or to ING for UTPC, are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by the IRC. See: e.g., IRS Guidance re Disregarded LLCs and IRS Notice 12-52 re Donations to Disregarded LLCs. For simplicity, we suggest your donations be made to ING for UTPC.
