Cathedral Gorge State Park is an impressive state park located in the southeast region of Nevada. It is two and a half hours away from Las Vegas and and two hours away from Great Basin National Park. The caves and cathedral spires are made of clay and were formed from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. I stopped at Moon Caves first to explore some slot canyons and get an up close view of the the clay formation. Next, I drove to Cathedral Caves, C.C.C. Water Tower Picnic Area, and took the Miller Point trail (1 mile) to the expansive overlook. Alternatively, you can park at the Visitor Center and walk a short distance to the same point.

Cathedral Gorge is a very unique geological phenomenon and well worth a visit! The park itself is quite small but makes for a fun short visit. Besides exploring the short 'slot canyons', visitors can also a hike around the park and stay at a nice campground. Bizarre but beautiful Slot Canyons. I visited plenty of slot canyons before and this place is a bit different than others. The slot canyons here are made from ancient mud, and has this fluted appearance that no other sandstone slot canyon has. The slots are generally quite short though, probably only about 50-100. The slot canyons found at Cathedral Gorge are undoubtedly the main event, with miles of trails that wind in, around and through this striking landscape. Hike from Miller Point Overlook—a gazebo that was originally constructed by the CCC and serves up incredible sunrise or sunset views of the slot canyons below.
